chapter forty-eight

“How much longer, Boss?”

It took Lance Ressler a moment to hear the question. For the past two days, he’d been quiet while the rest of his men had used the end of the mission as the perfect excuse to relax. That didn’t bother him. What did was the mission itself.

His second-in-command, a short mustache wearing tank of a man called John Nolan, had poked so many holes in the operation that normally Ressler would’ve refused it. Not this time though, the pay was beyond good and if they were successful, then there was more work for them afterwards.

That was what he needed. Keeping busy was the only thing that would keep Ressler’s mind from wandering to that dark place nearly all servicemen had. He knew plenty of men who didn’t, and their families had paid the price.

Not me.

“Boss,” Harry Manning said, pushing his glasses up his nose for the umpteenth time. “How much longer until we reach our destination?”

The man in charge of technology hadn’t asked the question originally. That had been Sam Paxton, one of the best recon men on the planet. But Manning was sitting closer to Ressler and was able to get his attention easier.

Blinking, Ressler checked his wristwatch, then looked at the GPS mounted on the dashboard in front of him. They were in the middle of their journey from Guanajuato to Mexico City. They’d left earlier that morning after packing everything up and making sure the rooms they’d been occupying were scrubbed of any trace evidence. With the level of scrutiny that had come from the local authorities, news channels and criminal elements, Ressler believed it was better to be safe than sorry.

“Another two hours, three if we get stuck in traffic,” he said before looking at the man next to him. The other recon expert, Al Cameron, was hunched over the wheel and Ressler could picture him imagining he was a racecar driver. “You think we’ll make it there sooner?”

Cameron shook his head then said, “Forget about it, Boss. It’s Mexico.”

“Thanks,” Ressler said, ignoring the reference to one of his favorite movies of all time. He knew his men had picked up on his quietness. It’s what made him such a good commander. Of course, Nolan had given him a heads up and he knew that sooner or later, he’d have to address the elephant in the room.

He sighed before turning his chair to the left. This was one of the reasons he had wanted the tour-style van. It gave him and his men the ability to move about and whatever else they needed had been added by their contact in-country. His eyes took in the rest of his men, and he smiled.

There wasn’t a better group of men he’d ever commanded in his illustrious and long career in the army. Originally, he had thirteen men, then over the years with each mission, that number dwindled. Then there were the ones who retired from the squad or found a job behind a desk. He didn’t fault them.
